What do Java developers do?

Java is not only an Indonesian island, but also the name of one of the most widely used programming languages. Those programmers who use this language are called Java software developers. Since Java (not to be confused with the programming language JavaScript) is compatible with all operating systems, Java developers are often sought after.

Java developers are primarily responsible for the development and enhancement of websites and applications as well as games with Java. This also involves constant optimisation, testing and code review, maintenance and documentation as well as the detection and correction of errors (bugs).

So what does a Java developer need to be able to do?

When looking for Java programmers, formal qualifications such as degrees should not be given too much importance, because there are many qualified career changers here. Nevertheless, a degree in computer science or training as an IT specialist or software developer is a good basis for working as a Java developer.

The most important requirements for a job as a software developer for Java include - not surprisingly - mastery of the Java programming language and an understanding of software architectures in the JEE environment. However, this is by no means the end of the story: knowledge of other programming languages such as C, C++, PHP or database skills (such as MYSQL or Oracle) and web services (such as Jax-WS, Jax-RS and REST APIs in general) as well as web technologies and protocols (HTTP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS) are also frequently expected. Experience with frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, Vaadin or Wicket also comes into play. Java software developers should also be familiar with agile methods such as SCRUM and Kanban.

Overall, analytical thinking, abstraction and problem-solving skills are important in addition to IT expertise.
