What does a Cloud Engineer do?

Cloud engineering is a relatively new field and there is a lot of confusion about what cloud engineers actually do. In general, cloud engineers are responsible for designing, building and maintaining cloud-based systems. They work with customers to understand their needs and design solutions to meet those needs. What does a Cloud Engineer need to know?

A cloud engineer must be proficient in a variety of programming languages and have an in-depth understanding of cloud-based systems. In particular, they may have to come up with the best way to use certain programming languages when creating cloud-based applications. For example, they may have to know how to use Java to create scalable web applications. They must also be familiar with different DevOps tools to automate the deployment and management of cloud-based systems. Furthermore, they should also have a good understanding of how to use various cloud-based storage solutions, such as Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage. Also being familiar with different monitoring and logging tools, such as New Relic or Splunk, to troubleshoot issues with cloud-based systems is often a requirement.
