What does a web developer do?
A web developer, also known as a web programmer, plans and develops web-based software solutions, i.e. websites and applications. But that's not all: existing web applications are also developed further, maintained and constantly optimised by web developers. To this end, web developers conduct requirements analyses, set up automated test procedures and implement code.
In addition, web developers are responsible for system integration and interfaces between different systems. They develop databases and take care of authoring and editorial systems. This is where their field of activity also overlaps with that of the web administrator.
Web developers usually specialise in activities on the frontend (i.e. the user side) or the backend (i.e. the server / system side). Depending on the specific area of responsibility, they work not only with their peers, but also with web designers and often also with online marketing managers.

What does a web developer need to be able to do?
Capabilities and skills are more important than formal qualifications: What applies to programmers in general also applies to web developers. However, an apprenticeship, for example as an IT specialist, or a degree in (media) computer science is of course a solid foundation.
Web developers should have knowledge of HTML, CSS, XML, AJAX, PHP, Ruby, Java, JavaScript or TypeScript. In addition, web developers should be familiar with GUI frameworks if they work in the frontend. Working in the backend requires knowledge of OOP, HTTP and databases.
In addition to these skills, web programmers are familiar with requirements analyses, content management systems, templates, test concepts and software architectures. Furthermore, they deal with the technical aspects of online marketing, such as search engine optimisation (SEO).
Web developers wanted!
No website without a web developer and hardly any business in the 21st century without a website.
Simultaneously, the demands on web developers are constantly increasing: methodical, technical and professional knowledge and the willingness to constantly expand these are in demand. Web programmers must be able to work independently. In addition, social skills are essential in order to be able to coordinate with the team. It is no surprise that web developers and especially senior web developers are in demand.
