What does a DevOps engineer do?
The term "DevOps" has been used frequently in IT for some time now. The term DevOps (composed of the English terms for "development" and "IT operation") varies from company to company between an activity and a mindset. In most cases, it combines specific areas of activity from software development, system administration and quality assurance with the aim of optimizing processes.
The field of activity of DevOps engineers or DevOps managers is therefore very versatile; they have to develop as well as manage. In addition to general programming and administrative activities, they develop scripts and tools, ensure a smooth continuous integration and delivery process, manage certificates and monitor processes, among other things. In the process, they ensure regular updates, worked on microservice architecture and are sometimes responsible for container orchestration and virtualized systems.

Which skills does a DevOps engineer need to have?
Being the interface between software development and system administration, a DevOps engineer must cover both areas professionally. A suitable basis for this is, for example, a degree in computer science or IT or training as an IT specialist for system administration or application development.
To work as a DevOps manager, programming skills are required through an understanding of languages such as Java, Python, PHP, C# or Ruby, knowledge of scripting (such as Bash or Shell). Also, knowledge of server systems for the respective operating system (Windows, iOS, Linux). For modern setups in the cloud, experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and container tools such as Docker and Kubernetes is required.
DevOps managers should also understand IT infrastructures, be proficient in agile working techniques, and be team players with strong communication skills. A strong willingness to learn is also important. Someone who has these skills can join as a junior DevOps engineer.
Wanted: DevOps Engineer!
DevOps engineers must combine skills and abilities of software developers with those of systems engineers, i.e., they must have knowledge of software development (appropriate to the respective operating system) and administration. As an interface between different departments, strong communication skills are essential for DevOps managers. Since the digital economy is constantly evolving, the candidate also needs to continuously educate him- or herself. So it's no wonder that senior DevOps engineers in particular are highly sought after and in short supply.
How does alphacoders identify qualified DevOps managers?
