What does a mobile app developer do?

For app developers, the job title says it all: they are involved in app development for tablets and smartphones, i.e. mobile devices. The demand is growing steadily: nowadays, hardly any large company can do without at least one app. At the same time, mobile game development is becoming an increasingly important topic, and not only because of the e-sports trend.

In mobile software development, a basic distinction is made between native app development and the development of hybrid apps. While the latter is suitable for simpler applications and works across platforms (iOS and Android), native app development is required for more complex content (such as animations).

What does an app developer need to know?

Even though app programming can now be studied, app developers are often trained software developers or web designers. As in all other IT professions, however, there are many career changers. Basically, app programmers understand both programming and design, especially responsive development and mobile first.

For the former, mastery of Java or Kotlin (Android) and/or Swift (iOS) or Objective C, HTML, CSS and basically object-based programming is essential. In addition, knowledge of mobile cross-platforms such as AMP and agile development methods is helpful. In terms of design, mobile app developers should be able to implement graphical user interfaces.

App programmers wanted! Why are app developers so difficult to find?

The app developers need to be relatively broadly positioned. In addition to technical skills, they must also be able to adopt the user's perspective. At the same time, the demand for them is constantly increasing. It becomes particularly difficult when web-and-mobile developers are in demand, i.e. developers who are proficient in both.
