What does a system administrator do?
Above a certain size, almost every company has an IT system administrator, often simply called an IT administrator or sysadmin. This person works in the background, but has a lot of responsibility.
The IT administrator usually acts as a network administrator, ensures that the system runs smoothly (incident management) and maintains the systems (maintenance management), for example by regularly carrying out hardware and software updates. In addition, the range of tasks often includes IT project management.
Since technical problems often cannot be solved and systems maintained during working hours, system administrators often have to be on call in the evenings or at weekends. In the worst case, nothing works without them. It's no wonder that there's even an annual commemoration day for IT admins, System Administrator Appreciation Day, on July 31.

Which skills does a system administrator need to have?
Although many admins have a degree in computer science or IT, a university degree is not necessarily required to learn IT administration. An IT education links to a solid foundation. As in all IT professions, however, there are also numerous people who change careers among sysadmins.
In any case, a sysadmin should have an in-depth understanding of clients and servers (Microsoft, Unix or Linux) as well as database systems (such as MySQL, Oracle, DB2 or MSSQL). Knowledge of scripting languages is also helpful. IT admins should also acquire knowledge of network architectures (such as WLAN, VPN and TCP/IP), system monitoring, security solutions, backup systems and also cloud systems. Analytical thinking and a systematic approach are essential. In addition, a system administrator should be able to communicate and be empathetic - after all, he or she often has to understand and solve the problems of people who know little about IT.
IT administrator wanted!
There's no question about it: being a system administrator is not an easy job. Extensive expertise to handle a broad portfolio of tasks with changing requirements meets great responsibility. The fact that irregular working hours are sometimes part of the job does not necessarily make it more popular: therefore IT administrators are rare and highly sought-after.
How does alphacoders recruit experienced system administrators?
"What makes IT admins tick?" is a question that recruiters from Berlin to Munich ask themselves in their desperate search for suitable candidates. In the face of an almost empty applicant market, they are therefore glad to use the services of headhunters. In order to find the right candidate, it is essential that the headhunter understands what a potential candidate is capable of, but also what motivates him or her. To find suitable system administrators, you should therefore literally speak their language. Sysadmins are not all the same, and the search for the right candidate should take this into account.
