What are the responsibilities of a CTO?

The position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is the position of the head of technology in a company. His or her responsibilities vary depending on the size of the company and the level of technology, and whether there is a CIO (Chief Information Officer) and CRO (Chief Research Officer) in addition to the CTO.

Usually, a CTO is primarily responsible for research and development. CTOs must always know and be able to evaluate the latest technological developments. He/she acts as an interface between the executive board and the IT department and usually reports in to the CEO. Together with the CEO, the CTO plans the strategic direction of the company and is usually responsible for its transfer into the IT structure of the company.

To do this, he or she must know the market just as well as the company's existing resources and possibilities.

A CTO's responsibilities also often include monitoring the IT infrastructure, controlling and developing technical processes, technical planning and (in cooperation with marketing) portraying the company to the public. He or she is responsible for product development and also for the profitability of corresponding products. In addition, CTOs have both professional and disciplinary personnel responsibility.

How do you become a CTO?

No newcomer to the profession is ever hired as a boss - this is also true for Chief Technology Officers. Those who want to become CTOs usually have to have many years of experience as developers and project and product managers, which often builds on a corresponding degree.

Since CTOs also have personnel responsibility, they need to have leadership skills. In addition, skills in IT infrastructure and a feel for and interest in market development are important.

A chief technology officer usually reports to the managing director and often represents the company externally, for example at trade fairs. Therefore, he or she should also be able to present well.
