What does a QA engineer do?
"Testing, testing, testing!" - this describes the field of activity of a QA engineer quite aptly. "QA" stands for quality assurance. English job titles are common in this profession. Thus, in the German-speaking world, we also speak of a QA engineer, quality engineer, QA tester, QA manager, QA specialist, QA developer, software quality engineer or software tester.
An individual in this role takes care of test automation to find errors ("bugs") in newly integrated or existing software (usually within a given time frame). After all, no software can be used without first being adequately tested.
In order to continuously improve the testing process and the test systems, the QA engineer also documents this procedure and develops concepts for optimal software testing. For this purpose, he or she creates test data and test specifications, carries out software tests according to these specifications and also creates his or her own tests, such as performance, functionality, security, interface and regression tests.
Quality engineers have a particularly high level of responsibility, because the software they test must meet clearly defined quality standards (some of which they have previously defined themselves).

Which skills does a QA engineer need to have?
QA developers usually have completed professional training or a degree or diploma in the field of computer science. As in other programming jobs, many QA managers are career changers. However, many potential employers want the candidate to be ISTQB certified.
A QA engineer should be an expert in test automation, meaning that he or she should be proficient in common test methods and able to develop automated tests. In order to do this, the QA tester must be proficient in various applications (such as Selenium, Citrus Framework, SoapUI, JMeter, Ranorex or SonarQube).
A good QA specialist is characterized by accuracy, patience, persistence and a certain tendency towards perfectionism.
Why are QA engineers in such high demand?
A QA engineer quickly finds enough work, and not only in security-related areas, such as those close to politics in Berlin. Experts who take care of test automation are particularly in demand in software development. Because there are only a few specialists, QA managers are usually free to choose their workplace.
